Thesis Statement – Nursing Philosophy Essay

Despite positive changes in the health care system, nurses are still subject to oppression within the profession.

Introduction – Philosophy Of Nursing Essay

According to the American Nurses Association, ‘nursing is a dynamic profession based on theories, concepts and methods of care that are selected, developed and used by the professional nurse’ (ANA). As such, nurses should be able to set their own standards and practice in accordance with these standards. Despite this fact, however, the nursing profession has been known to experience oppression within its ranks. Oppression occurs when people exercise power over other races or genders for solely prejudicial reasons. Although there have been movements around the world towards equal rights for all citizens regardless of race or gender, feminist theorists postulate that women still face subjugation within many social institutions; one such institution in health care.

Main Body – Philosophy Of Nursing Essay

Nursing has been known to experience oppression within its ranks, which occurs when people exercise power over other races or genders for solely prejudicial reasons. Although there have been movements around the world towards equal rights for all citizens regardless of race or gender, feminist theorists postulate that women still face subjugation within many social institutions; one such institution in health care. Nurses are subject to this type of abuse simply because they are working class members of society who hold commonly held beliefs that are considered ‘non-normative’ by dominant groups in society. This means that nurses do not conform to societal norms much in the same way that homosexuals, drug users and prostitutes are ostracized from mainstream society because their actions go against what is believed to be ‘normal’ behavior. Nurses are non-conformists because they care for the sick and dying, seeing things that most people would not want to see in their lifetime. In addition, nurses work long hours with little pay under arduous working conditions. They also tend to be unmarried – a society where marriage is considered a must.

As such, it should not come as a surprise that there have been a number of incidences where nurses have been subjected to oppression within the profession. Notable incidents include: The “Nurse Witch Trials” of Salem , Massachusetts ( 1692), Florence Nightingale’s persecution by fellow physicians while she was nursing soldiers during the Crimean War (1854-1856), and what has been termed “Burnout Syndrome” among nurses in the contemporary U.S.. In reference to “Nurse Witch Trials,” it has been suggested that this was an example of misogyny taken to an extreme which became a witch-hunt against women, while feminists have postulated that this hysteria had less to do with fear of women and more to do with fear of change because it threatened male dominance.

While Nightingale’s persecution by her own colleagues might be attributed largely to sexism, the emergence of Burnout Syndrome shows how nurses have been attacked for being too liberal in their thinking and actions, especially when they tend towards progressive values such as helping other races and genders instead of just their own kind. In other words, nurse often put others’ needs before themselves. As a result, it has been suggested by nurse theorists that women in the profession need to develop a ‘tough hide’ in order to survive oppression within their ranks.
